Children’s Dental Care
At Forestville Dental we understand the importance of creating a positive attitude towards dental care from an early age.
We recommend that you bring your child in for a first visit at 2 to 3 years of age. This first checkup is a fun ride in the chair where we will “count the teeth”. It allows us to make sure everything is developing normally. It will also help your child become familiar with our office and staff, which can be very helpful in preparing for future visits.
We may also discuss non-nutritive habits (finger sucking, pacifier), injury prevention, oral hygiene, and effects of diet on the dentition.
Here are some tips to make your child’s first visit enjoyable and positive:
- If your child shows apprehension or anxiety about the first visit, bring him/her in with you at your own routine check-up appointment.
- Being positive about the dental experience is very helpful. It is best to avoid communicating your own dental fears to your child. Refrain from using words such as “it won’t hurt”, “drill” or “needle”.
- Get your child used to dental care by regularly cleaning your child’s teeth using a soft bristled brush. Begin using a mild toothpaste specifically designed for toddlers or young children.
